FACTORS TO CONSIDER WITH OFFICE PLANTS

Prices and details of our office plants

Levels of light
The amount of light availble in your office is probably the most important factor when considering whether an office plant is suitable and then which office plant.  Plants need light to photosynthesize and will shrivel and die without sufficient light. Their leaves manufacture the plant’s food and energy by absorbing light over the thin surface area.

Also improtant is that plants need periods of darkness in order to rest. Artificial light can be used to substitute for natural sunlight.

Low
light

Under 250 Lux

A ‘shady spot’ inside your office that gets some light, but no direct light. This is usually a north window or in a room with an east, west or south exposure with the plant away from the windows. Low light does not mean no light.

Medium-Low light
250-750 Lux

A spot inside your office that gets some light, but no direct light. Desk lighting is typically around 500 lux and above

Medium
light

750-1,500 Lux

As much light as possible without any direct sunlight. This is usually an eastern exposure. A curtain can help reduce the light in a west or south window. The light is far more intense in the summer than in the winter, so conditions may need to be adjusted to match the season.

Medium High Light
1,500-2,500 Lux

Areas lit through a mixture of natural and artifical lighting. A large west or south window or an area near to a sunny window. For is direct sunlight a sheer curtain may be needed to make a site suitable.

High
Light

Over 2,500 Lux

Well-lit areas such as atriums and conservatories with significant daylight. Supplemental artificial light in the winter.

Locating plants
Office plants can be placed in a wide range of locations.  Common factors to consider when buying plants,
Plants should generally be protected from direct sun light unless they are adapted to this. Direct sun light generally comes from North,  East or West facing windows. Windows with blinds can protect plants from being burnt by the sun.
Plants should not be placed too close to hot sources of heat.  For example, artifical lights that can burn the foliage. Most plants should be placed 30 cm or more from the light source.
Rotating plants can provide a more even light distribution whether you use natural or artificial light
Will the plant fit in the space I am considering?
Sufficient space should be left around plants for staff to move without brushing against them.
If plants are placed on a table, ensure the ceiling is high enough.
